It’s a sad good-by…

January 28, 2010 By: Mr. Wisdumb Category:  culture, non sequitur, *DUMB, *WISE, books No Comments →

What I was really hanging around for, I was trying to feel some kind of a good-by. I mean I’ve left schools and places I didn’t even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don’t care if it’s a sad good-by or a bad good-by, but when I leave a place I like to know I’m leaving it. If you don’t, you feel even worse.

Story #1: Tennis Channel won’t air Dubai tournament
Although I  think a country/city/person  should have the right to be as racist or stupid as they want, I also think the rest of the civilized world should choose not to support them. As such, I applaud the Tennis Channel and other companies that have pulled support and financing from the UAE and Dubai tournament organizers. Maybe if the people who are attempting to turn Dubai into the greatest tourist destination in the world learn that the rest of the world won’t visit or bring their money to them, the UAE will learn to sing a different tune and let go of their religious bigotry… BTW, every other religion in the world should also take note.

Story #2: Drunk man run over by train awarded $2.3 million
I think every person who was delayed or inconvenienced by this drunkard should get together and form a class-action law suit against him for at least $2.3 million.

Story #3: ‘Pull My Finger’ subject of court fight
There are over 75 different flatulence simulation software applications for the iPhone. Screw you Luddites, technology is awesome!

Disney at it again?

Hanna candyIf this is real, I have to wonder if the Disney folks have started adding their subliminal porn to other outlets besides the movies.

I mean, really, no one who approves the package design on this saw the possibility of how it could be seen the wrong way?

Anyway, has anyone seen this product in a store or online?

My admittedley short search didn’t find any confirmations if the product was actually released.

The good news… I am way behind on my retirement savings anyway

Sad USAThis story paints a fairly sad picture about the good ol’ USA. Lowlights include:

  • Americans live shorter lives than citizens of almost every other developed nation
  • Of the world’s richest nations, the US has the most children (15%) living in poverty
  • Of the OECD nations, the US has the most people in prison - as a percentage and in absolute numbers
  • 25% of 15-year-old students performed at or below the lowest level in an international maths test - worse than Canada, France, Germany and Japan
  • If the US infant mortality rate were equal to first-ranked Sweden, more than 20,000 babies would survive beyond their first year of life

Most conversations in English are between nonnative speakers who use it as a lingua franca.

Interesting story about how the English language is evolving — and why.

BTW, ‘lingua franca’ is a common language used by diverse people with different native languages or dialects.
