The Mythbusters‘ episode debunking the conspiracy theories about the moon landing was very good. I especially like Buzz Aldrin’s take on whether or not he was really on the moon:
This post inspired [read: stolen] from Negativesmart. I normally do not repeat a post someone else did, so as to avoid that, I am adding something to this one. Check out MythbusterResults as a good source to get the quick answer on whether a myth is true or busted.
Planet Green TV - which they bill as first and only 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network - has been on the air for a week now (premiered June 4), and I have seen a handful of shows. Overall, I am happy with and like what I have seen. I believe the channel was previously the Discovery Home Network, but I have to admit that I get my Discovery channels mixed up with the Learning channels and other such cable options. Anyway, some of the shows are new programming and others are shows that already existed. If you have access to it, check it out if you can… I especially liked the show Wa$ted.
Sometimes you are lucky enough to see the very beginnings of that which is destined for greatness. I don’t know how many people saw this particular cable access show, but I bet the ones that did will say they have been fans of his since his early days. I know I brag about how I used to see Tina Fey live on stage when she was part of the main stage at Chicago’s Second City… just imagine how excited the fans of The Charly Show will be when he is accepting his first Emmy — or more likely, his first Oscar as I predict the small screen will not be able to contain his greatness:
I am already a huge fan of Ninja Warrior… and I am definitely sold on this new show based on this video:
I can’t believe there isn’t an American version of either show yet. American Gladiator doesn’t even come close as far as I am concerned.
I just watched the first episode of Saturday Night Live on DVD last night. Overall the show, hosted by George Carlin, was mediocre at best. It did have a few highlights (most famously the Andy Kaufman Mighty Mouse lip syncing bit) and some of the groundwork for what was to come was set in the first episode (Weekend Update, the Bee sketches, commercial parodies, short films).
Anyway, the thing that struck me most was that even though the show aired over 33 years ago, quite a few elements of the show are still very appropriate today. Some topics covered included a sketch about how American’s love guns, George Carlin had jokes about the hassles of security at the airport and how the government would use the fear of terrorism to infringe upon other areas, and a sketch about the new technology of home security.
There was also a commercial parody about a new and improved razor that had three blades. The idea was that having three blades would be so ridiculous — in fact, the tagline for the fake commercial was “because you’ll believe anything.” Of course, I am sure the writers of that particular sketch must have been quite amused when the three-bladed razor came out… and again when the four-bladed razor came out.
Well, my predictions were pretty good. I called Mike Super as the winner, and I was right. I said I thought Eran would be the one to go, and he was, but he went out in third place, not fourth… so I was close, but not correct.
Well, I called the three that were safe and the two that weren’t in my last post… except for the twist were Guy got saved. After tonight’s performances, I hope Angela gets the boot (she made a mistake, it took way too long, the climax used a fairly well known gimmick [actually explained in a Penn&Teller book] and I agreed with Chris Angel’s assessment that she didn’t connect to the audience), but I bet she squeaks by again. I also thought Eran’s performance was pretty weak (especially compared to a much better version of the same concept done by Derren Brown). So, I predict he is the one to go, and if not him, then Angela. Mike’s performance should make him a lock for moving on, and I think Guy’s performance, unfortunately, will amaze the type of person who actually votes on these type of shows. I say unfortunate because, come on already, enough with the bending of cutlery.
Anyway, I predict, and hope, the Mike Super becomes the next phenom.
BTW, I thought Gerry’s performance was his best one… though I don’t think he described the ending part with the audience very accurately and the show shouldn’t let these guys get away with that type of thing.
I am a few days late on this, but I just got to watch it yesterday. Anyway, I was glad to see Jim Callahan get the boot. Nothing too special on this episode to comment on other than the bad acting of two of the contestants. The snake guy, Eran Raven, was especially over-the-top with his bad acting during the “I want to continue” speech. Also, Angela Funovits, upped her bad acting with her limping from the supposed burns on her leg.
Anyway, despite the bad acting on those two performances, my guess is that both of them our safe. The chic will get a pass for being attractive and working a routine where she shows off her legs, and the dude will get some sympathy votes for being bitten and the supposed risk of death. I also think Mike Super will make the next level with his Voodoo doll routine. I think he is the best entertainer of the bunch and his routines so far have been very clever.
If I am right, that means things are looking bad for Guy Bavli (hydrochloric acid guy) and Gerry McCambridge (paint ball dude).
